TRIP REPORT TO CANTERBURY PARK IN MINNESOTA

I went to visit my kids over the holiday in Minneapolis. During my visit I
stopped to play poker at Canterbury Park, which is a little casino with
poker tables inside a race track.

The place is like going back in time because there were no no-limit games,
only limit Hold'em (mainly 8-16, with single tables of 20-40 and 40-80) and
spread limit (2-100). It has been years since I played limit hold'em and
even longer since I played spread limit. I played mostly spread limit on
this trip.

The place had a grungy feel to it, reminded me of Commerce. Kinda grungy,
shady guys playing and standing around, just had that worn feel and I didn't
trust the games to play in the 20-40 or the 40-80 especially.

Nothing really notable about the sessions, other than one time I got AK on
the button three times in one orbit and lost them all to trash hands in the
blinds. That was kinda weird, including once when an ace hit the flop and I
lost to A-x when the big blind hit two pair.

I didn't get any food there, but they did have a grill/restaurant that
looked pretty good. Oddly, when I was there the weather wasn't that bad, in
fact it was a little bit warmer there than it was here in Oklahoma.
Overall, I liked Minneapolis/St. Paul. One night I went to a bar downtown
where my son hangs out and it had a cool vibe that reminded me a lot of
Denver. Of course, the place is nuttily progressive and that seeps in, but
the people are overall friendly. When I was driving one time I was scanning
radio channels and heard the Black Information Network. I listened to that
for a long time, fascinated by it. It was presented as a news station, but
primarily reported crimes they always listed the races of the persons
involved and most stories involved whites committing crimes against blacks.
All stories were slanted from the black perspective. I suppose one could
say that whites have been doing this longer, so tit for tat, but still I
couldn't help but feeling that racial propaganda like this is not helpful to
anyone.

Also, there is a large population of Somalis in the area which is noticeable
at places like Wal-Mart, which is something of which I was unaware. I don't
know why Somalis would focus on that city but apparently they do.

Finally, I needed some new sunglasses and want to see the Mall of America.
I went there with my son, and what monstrosity that place is. It's kinda
like going to Vegas for the first time and seeing for yourself the scale of
the casinos. The mall is just like a small city, with a little amusement
park in the middle and endless stores. I'm glad I went to see it, but there
is definitely no reason to go back there. The crowds and bustle are
unbearable.

Interesting. Keep returning for a while.

Most malls down here are actually just disappearing.

We are losing malls in Ohio. Then again, we had something like three times the retail space per capita of much of the country.

It's the Amazon effect...

We do most our shopping from home. With our cars costing 25 cents a mile and Amazon having everything, they've opened a
second distribution center at the other end of town.

Same here. We do almost all our shopping online. We get our groceries delivered from a local supermarket and get the rest of the stuff from Amazon Prime or, occasionally, company websites. It's not worth the time and effort to go to stores anymore. Gas and wear and tear on the vehicles is a factor too. For ten bucks a month or whatever it is Amazon delivers most everything for free and gives you a streaming service to boot. I don't know how they do it. I think brick and mortar stores are starting to go the way of the dodo, with limited exceptions. Then with so many people working at home, I sure wouldn't want to have my money in commercial real estate right now.

Speaking of Bidenomics, did you see today's jobs report? It blew away expectations, again. Then there was the solid wage growth, and Q3 GDP was just revised to 5.2%. And that's with the Fed trying kill it with 12 rate increases! Inflation is down to 3.1%. Wow. I don't understand the mass delusion in the US that the economy is bad. Fox News must really have reach.

Because rents are out of reach for many,
.

Depends on the locations. Otherwise, as Bill says, the economy’s running like a clock, Market’s the highest EVER, unemployment lowest in 54-years, gas at $3, city crime lowest in 3-years (FBI stats.), two cities have higher murder rates and inflation continues to go down.

Republican are having a hell of a time finding something to bitch about, so they’re taking trips to the border and crying their collective eyes out. Yet:

Let’s put the grease where the squeak is. How about placing some blame on House Republicans after voting to eliminate thousands of Border Patrol agents undercut fentanyl crackdown and opposing record border security funding Biden delivered? Republicans still refuse Democrat’s request to renegotiate new immigration policies, even after admitting the system’s broken.

and the cost of medical care continues to climb.
.

No, medical’s leveling out. Biden took the pharmaceuticals by the tentacles and told them, “Lower the price of drugs or I’ll give away patent data (the government has given you millions for ‘R&D’ so it’s part ours).”

So, yea, things are good and that pisses of lying Fox News *
