Southern boy (OK, I'm 31) who is still in the Newlywed phase of a
romance with poker. I've been involved online for about eight months,
but I've only played real tables (what's "B&M" stand for? Does it
involve handcuffs and leather masks?) twice, and both experiences came
during a weekend in Biloxi where I played at the President and the
Grand. I spent about four hours at each place playing 1-4-8-8 with my
$50 buy-in and left the President up about $90 and the Grand down
about $40.

I'm heading down next weekend (Jan. 16) to New Orleans, and they have
the Blue Dog Poker Room down there at Harrah's. Being a fan of HE
(aren't all the newcomers?!), I was wondering if I will be able to
spend a hefty chunk of my Saturday playing there. If so, how much
should I reasonably expect to bring and be willing to lose? Is $300
going to be enough to play a lengthy amount of time in some of the
lower-end games there?

Honestly, at 1-4-8-8 tables or anything comparable, I can't imagine
going down more than ~ $150 without hitting the panic button and
getting outta Dodge, but I'd still like to know what amount is
prudent.

Also, anyone who's been who wants to offer their insights on this
particular experience, I'd love to get your input.

Thanks much,
Hermie

B & M is shorthand for Brick and Mortar-- used to refer to
"real life" casinos / card-rooms / bookstores, etc, as distinct from
Online or Internet versions. For instance, "Online booksellers such
as Amazon.com are putting pressure on B & M bookstores such as Barnes
and Noble". Or: "online cardrooms have led to increased attendance at
B&M cardrooms."

i'm pretty sure that they moved the poker room out of the blue dog room, but
there's still poker at harrah's.

the big game down there is omaha high, and the players are loose, loose, and
loose.

Loose is a good word for it. Be prepared for a potential big swing in
your bankroll if you go down. This actually is a good weekend to head
down, as there is a big $500 tournament on Sunday, so the room should be
packed. There is a good 6-12 (w/ 1/2 kill) hold 'em game, also typically
a 3-6.

You should be able to find whatever you want with the tournament going.

Good luck and see you there.

Hermie,

Yes, you can spend the day in the poker room at Harrah's. The 3-6
holdem games usually have a few tables going and usually a line for
the game. They also have a 6-12, 10-20 game going most of the time
too. They have a no-limit game with a minimum $ 100.00 buy in.

The Blue Dog Poker Room is now a restaurant, but that's just because
they moved (and expanded) the poker room to another location. I played
there in November while on a business trip.

Personally, I love this room. It's not Vegas, but it's plesant. I like
the dealers, and even most of the regulars are fairly cordial. Someone
said that Omaha High is the game there, and once upon a time (well, 2
years ago) that was true; but the recent explosion of poker on TV has
made HE a bigger game at Harrah's. On a Saturday night you can find
3-6, 6-12, 10-20, and sometimes 20-40 limit games. There's also one
table of NL, $100 buy-in minimum, but $100 wouldn't get you through a
single hand (Most of the stacks I saw numbered between 1K and 5K).

I played both the 3-6 tables and the 6-12 tables because of my limited
bankroll. Great action--I mean, really great. Very loose, passive
players mostly. I was totally bummed one night because I couldn't
catch any cards to get into these pots, but the other 3 nights I did
well. Usually 6-12 and 8-16 players are better than 2-4, 3-6, and 4-8
players, but I saw no evidence of this when I played the 6-12 tables
at Harrah's. Pots were routinely around $300-$400, with most players
happy to play Axo or anything suited.

If you can play tight, $300 should be plenty for playing a 3-6 table
all Saturday night. If you get tempted by the idiotic play around you,
though, you can easily cruise through that $300 in just a few hours.
So it's really up to you. I don't think $300 is near enough to survive
the swings at 6-12, unless you happen to get lucky and hit some big
pots early on. In any case, I took $500 to the 6-12 table and felt
that was a little light.

Just a warning: The wait on a Saturday night can be anywhere from 1-3
hours, depending on which convention is in town and what game is on
TV. The earlier you get there (I'd sit down around 4:30 or 5), the
better.

Looks like a I went a year and half too early. Last time I played there the
ONLY hold'em was a half omaha/half hold'em. The hold'em rounds were so good
I basically sat out the omaha rounds unless I had the absolute nuts (and
still got paid off!). Good room.
