Have you ever noticed that many of the people you run into during the
holiday season are really pissed off? As part of my continuing war on
Christmas, I will simply wish everyone survival... and, if possible, good
times with family and friends. Now, time to get the apple pies in the
oven.

I'm a fairly competent and creative home cook with a good grasp of the
possibilities with the materials at hand. Baking is a different world. I
don't bake much, but using really good apples will get you more than half
way to a good apple pie.

Not ruining the crust is a problem. I like a good apple pie. I'm a mince
nut, though (Blame my grandfather, he got me hooked young) and they're only
available about 2 months a year. If I could bake my own without screwing it
up, I would.

I'm happy as hell. My computer died!

Of course, this means I had the excuse to go out and buy a new system
that totally rocks. i5 processor with quad cores, 8 MB RAM, and a 1TB
7200 RPM hard drive.

BTW, I think I've found the best little computer store in the
LA/Pasadena area. If anyone wants a recommendation, let me know.

These huge numbers still amaze me. I accepted your previous number without
a thought. Yet there it was, off by a magnitude of, what? Zillions! It
wasn't that long ago I was delighted in plugging in some chips and
increasing my computers memory from 32K to 64K. "Wow! Look at all that
memory." Now we mumble errors in the billions.

So what's after terabyte? Googlebite?

I recently posted a link to a photo of the "revolutionary" IBM 3330
disk drive that I worked with in my first job out of college. The
drive was the size about the size of my new desktop PC, and it held
and entire 440 MB. We had huge racks of these things just to hold a
few gigabytes. We had a whole room the size of a small gymnasium full
of those things, and they still held nowhere near the capacity of my
new hard drive.

In addition to that, we had four IBM 370 mainframe computers, each
costing over a million dollars. My new Intel microprocessor has 4
cores, each with far more processing power than one of those
mainframes.

The amount of memory is inversely proportional to its size. I thought 2
cores was the cat's meow. Voice Recognition is the new mouse. My cell
phone does things unmanageable just a few years ago. What's next? Why
can't see further into the future as to what technology will bring?

Last year my son purchased a computer that was liquid cooled. He even
added an additional cooling system because of the heat from the blinding
speed. Now it sits, unused, because there's better stuff out there.

Remember the book, Future Shock? We need some predictions. Like when the
first implant will happen. The ultimate connection, when your computer is
within you. When your talk and a VOX sends it directly into your computer
within. When wifi is as country wide as your cell phone connection.
Everyting will be connected.

What are we racing toward? How will it all end? How come I ran out of
Bourbon?

What are these things you call stores? I ordered a cheap little small

The thing I call a store is a place you can walk into and ask
questions, and if you have a problem with a unit, you can bring it in
there and get it fixed.

I ran out to a "store" to buy an HDMI cable yesterday. 6' of HDMI cost
over $25 including my approximately 10% tax. I could have ordered 6' of
HDMI for $3.50 if I were willing to wait a couple of days. No tax.
Shipping about $3 in this instance, but I can often get free. Expertise,
service and lots of actual consumer reportage of personal experience with
products can be found online. Hard for brick and mortars to compete with
that. Most don't. The one thing I need stores for is when I need to
actually get my hands on a product. Cameras, for example. If I don't
know the product line I need to get it in my hands and play with it. Feel
the size, weight and build quality. Work the controls to see how it does
what it says it does and whether that works for me.... things I need to
try on for size.

Good for you. I buy online, too, when I don't need a store.
Sometimes, online can't replace direct, personal service. And online
isn't always the best deal.

It's been a *long* time since my computer component needs weren't better
served online, but I know I'm not your typical consumer that way.

I still hit the B&M stores if, say, I need something like a SATA cable
that's cheap enough that paying >2x won't feel like much.

I do happen to be in the LA area and Pasadena isn't so far
Alice Computerworks. They 2 locations, one in La Crescenta and one
in San Marino. , I've only been to the San Marino location. It's a
small store, so they don't have the selection you'll find at, say,
Office Depot, but they're particular about what they carry. Their
service is unbeatable. Their prices are competitive, and I got a
really great deal on my new machine.

Wishing everyone at RGP a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, or whatever
holidays you celebrate. May you enjoy the time with friends and family
and be safe.
Michael
Have you ever noticed that many of the people you run into during the
holiday season are really pissed off? As part of my continuing war on
Christmas, I will simply wish everyone survival... and, if possible, good
times with family and friends.
I don't need one right this minute, but which store would you recommend?
I do happen to be in the LA area and Pasadena isn't so far
Alice Computerworks. They 2 locations, one in La Crescenta and one
in San Marino. , I've only been to the San Marino location. It's a
small store, so they don't have the selection you'll find at, say,
Office Depot, but they're particular about what they carry. Their
service is unbeatable. Their prices are competitive, and I got a
really great deal on my new machine.
ok thanks
