Post by chandlerPost by phlash74Wishing everyone at RGP a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, or whatever
holidays you celebrate. May you enjoy the time with friends and family
and be safe.
Michael
Have you ever noticed that many of the people you run into during the
holiday season are really pissed off? As part of my continuing war on
Christmas, I will simply wish everyone survival... and, if possible, good
times with family and friends.
I'm happy as hell. My computer died!
Of course, this means I had the excuse to go out and buy a new system
that totally rocks. i5 processor with quad cores, 8 MB RAM, and a 1TB
7200 RPM hard drive.
That should be 8 GB RAM, of course.
These huge numbers still amaze me. I accepted your previous number without
a thought. Yet there it was, off by a magnitude of, what? Zillions! It
wasn't that long ago I was delighted in plugging in some chips and
increasing my computers memory from 32K to 64K. "Wow! Look at all that
memory." Now we mumble errors in the billions.
So what's after terabyte? Googlebite?
I recently posted a link to a photo of the "revolutionary" IBM 3330
disk drive that I worked with in my first job out of college. The
drive was the size about the size of my new desktop PC, and it held
and entire 440 MB. We had huge racks of these things just to hold a
few gigabytes. We had a whole room the size of a small gymnasium full
of those things, and they still held nowhere near the capacity of my
new hard drive.
In addition to that, we had four IBM 370 mainframe computers, each
costing over a million dollars. My new Intel microprocessor has 4
cores, each with far more processing power than one of those
mainframes.
The amount of memory is inversely proportional to its size. I thought 2
cores was the cat's meow. Voice Recognition is the new mouse. My cell
phone does things unmanageable just a few years ago. What's next? Why
can't see further into the future as to what technology will bring?
Last year my son purchased a computer that was liquid cooled. He even
added an additional cooling system because of the heat from the blinding
speed. Now it sits, unused, because there's better stuff out there.
Remember the book, Future Shock? We need some predictions. Like when the
first implant will happen. The ultimate connection, when your computer is
within you. When your talk and a VOX sends it directly into your computer
within. When wifi is as country wide as your cell phone connection.
Everyting will be connected.
What are we racing toward? How will it all end? How come I ran out of
Bourbon?
