Do You Want the Bush Agenda, Just Updated?

Jun 14, 2012 | By ThinkProgress War Room

Back to Bush, Only Much Worse?

A few weeks ago, the Republican National Committee confirmed what we already knew: that Mitt Romney’s agenda would be the same as President George W. Bush, “just updated.”

What are some of the updates?

• New, even larger tax cuts for the wealthy and huge corporations

• Tax increases on middle class families with children and the poorest Americans

• The end of the Medicare guarantee

• Draconian cuts to Social Security and Medicaid

• Devastating cuts to programs and services that benefit the middle class each and every day

• Even more wasteful and unnecessary defense spending

In short, how does Mitt Romney differ from Bush? Romney is much further to the right and would give even more away to the wealthiest at the expense of the rest of us.

Americans Still Blame Bush for the Economy — And Five Reasons Why That’s Totally Fair

A new poll out today shows that Americans overwhelmingly blame Bush for our current economic conditions. Even 49 percent of Republicans blame Bush, along with 67 percent of independents and 90 percent of Democrats.

ThinkProgress’ Annie-Rose Strasser and Tara Culp-Ressler round up the top five reasons why Americans should continue to blame Bush for the economy:

1. Deregulated Wall Street: It was a great time to be a Wall Street executive during the Bush administration. Sweeping financial deregulation helped build the housing bubble and allowed financial institutions to pursue risky trades unchecked. In fact, Bush eliminated the rules that allowed Wall Street to cause the financial crash that plunged the nation into the Great Recession.

2. Cut Taxes For The Wealthy: The Bush tax cuts — over 50 percent of which benefited the richest 5 percent of American taxpayers — cost about $2.5 trillion over the decade after they were enacted. Ten years later, Bush’s tax cuts are still the main driving factor of the national debt:

3. Ran Up A Tab On Two Wars: The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost the country trillionsofdollars. Combined with Bush’s tax cuts, war spending was amain factor in blowing up the deficit and spending the surplus accumulated under Clinton. Lawmakers now use the deficit as an excuse for inaction.

4. Left Homeowners In A Lurch: While Bush was happy to help out the banks in the wake of the housing crisis, he did little to assist struggling homeowners.Hope For Homeowners, Bush’s proposal to assist those struggling with their mortgages, was a colossal failure; in its first six months, it helped just one homeowner renegotiate his mortgage. Many mortgage holders — 15.7 million or, one in three — are still underwater today.

5. Weakened Workers: Bush weakened worker safety regulations and collective bargaining rights under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Department of Labor throughout his time in office. Today, corporations are back to making record profits, while workers’ incomes are falling.

Are Americans *really* stupid enough to both blame Bush for the
economy and also want to fire Obama for it and hire the guy who will
do more of what Bush did?

Yes; but that's beside the point of why your situation was bad. Who was in charge when it went bad? If it had not gone bad, would your situation be good? As the 'situation' gets better, how can you blame the original bad situation on the guy that wasn't there, but is fixing it?

If a tornado comes through and damages your house, and the contractor
you hire to fix it is doing a lousy job, you don't say "That's OK, it
was the tornado's fault so I'll just pay this contractor more money to
keep fixing it." You get a new contractor.

Caveat: I don't buy into this whole partisan "It's all Bush's fault"
line. There were many factors at work and plenty of blame to go around,
on both parties.

So the salient point remains: no matter who was "at fault," our
interest in is who will do the better job of fixing the problem. The
blame game is just bad partisan politics.

WHOA! Kid, you're in WAY over your pointed little head. You first start by answering the above questions. (Which you couldn't because it would show you wrong before you began).

But goes to who can fix it. The Republicans want to go back to what cause the crash. You think that would fix it? Bush tried tax cuts; but that didn't work. He tired a weak stimulus by sending us all a small check; that didn't work. He left office a loser.

Romney thinks cutting our Social Security; Medicare; increasing defense spending, and giving that to the rich in the form of bigger tax cuts will do it. They've already sent the bill to the Senate. We KNOW that trickle down will not do it. You think it will?

Jerry, I know that you have locked in that bone safe between your ears
the fantasy that only Republicans caused the mess, and that Obama is

Nothing that I or anyone says to you, no facts that we give you, has

The Republican party bends over backwards to keep him from doing anything,
then pisses and moans because he hasn't done enough.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid stepped up to stop a vote in the Senate
on the president’s measure, which had been requested by an obviously
satisfied Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, because both men knew what
the president cannot or will not admit— that he does not have enough votes
within his own party, let alone from Republicans, to pass the bill he’s
been hyping for weeks.

So, let's stick with the tragically discredited Obama-era policies. Good
plan.

A person (Romney in this case) isn't his party. Maybe this one guy will
break away from his party bonds. Probably not, but we can hope. Obama is
a party automaton. Let's try a change. You can vote in Hillary in 4
years if Romney sucks.

There were many factors at work and plenty of blame to go around,

Too bad the guy we "left it to" can't handle the job.
This is hilarious.
The Republican party bends over backwards to keep him from doing anything,

2. Passed the Stimulus:

3. Passed Wall Street Reform:

Erm, nope. Afghanistan war escalated. Seriously. Where do you get this

Horseshit. Most of it hasn't gone into effect yet, and it's already been

Yep -- tax cuts and deregulation.
There's more in there than tax cuts and deregulation. Not all his ideas
are bad. His tax policy is disastrous, but it's never going to come pass.

Unfortunately, re-electing Obama is biting off your nose to spite your
face. America just can't take another four years of Obama. He's been
made toxic by the racist right wing. You need a white Republican-type
person in office or the right will continue their de facto boycott of
the US economy. Scaring consumers into pulling back just a couple of
percent is all it takes -- not hard when you have the media penetration
the right has in print, internet, and radio. Have you ever heard so much

Romney has stated that he's going to streamline government. That's
how he's going to save money and reduce spending. And we should
certainly believe him because streamlining government is such a novel
idea that's never been promised before by a presidential candidate.
Other than all the ones who've said the same thing. Jimmy Carter, for

Just check the economy and unemployment rate for the eight Bush years.

With Bush, functional. With Obama, dysfunctional.

Tax cuts with Bush, and especially with JFK and Ronald Reagan, not only
got the country out of economic trouble, but created a lasting surge of
economic growth and prosperity.

This is a logically reasonable conclusion if you make the correct
assumptions.

A preexisting mess continued to become even messier during the Bush
administration and has become even messier during the Obama
administration. The cause of the "mess" can be assumed to have been
caused by the respective person who was or is president ... the question
might be, is it a reasonable assumption.

It might be more reasonable to have made better assumptions.

First, the whole idea that debt is not important likely started with our
only four term president. Even the assumption that HE was responsible
for everything that followed can be made ... but it would be as silly as
assuming that any one of the following presidents are responsible for
the MESS.

You get no argument from me that we are not in a mess.

This is actually true. They have no comeback. When they check and find we're right, they're embarrassed. Yet they return to those that lie to them. (They keep watching FOX, even though they know they're being lied to). It reinforces them. It makes the feel better. The Dream Act can reasonably be viewed as a matter of fairness and
justice. Obama defends it as the right thing to do, and it's hard to
dispute that claim.

The Republican plan for hiring foreigners can't be justified in any
such manner. It's strictly a ploy to let companies cut costs at the
expense of American workers.

I know you have difficulty with finding meaning in certain words, Pepe.
My point ... what I was saying was a clever reference to "illegal
aliens" ... I admit that my cleverness is sometimes too clever.

The Republicans are NOT trying to allow "illegal aliens" jobs that seem
to be going vacant for want of Americans who are qualified ... these are
trained aliens that want to come and work in jobs that Americans do not
seem to be qualified to do.

The "illegal aliens" that are going to be allowed (in your words) to
take the jobs of "American workers" are the ones that have been given
the green light by the current administration.

You have heard about that, haven't you?

You're swallowing the propaganda hook, line, and sinker. There's no

foreign workers over qualified American workers.

What bullshit. The Republicans have made many proposals, all of which
Reid and the Democrats in the Senate block. Then they accuse the

In 2008/2009 Obama promised to seek compromise and work with

So the salient point remains: no matter who was "at fault," our

But goes to who can fix it. The Republicans want to go back to what cause the crash. You think that would fix it? Bush tried tax cuts; but that didn't work. He tired a weak stimulus by sending us all a small check; that didn't work. He left office a loser.
Romney thinks cutting our Social Security; Medicare; increasing defense spending, and giving that to the rich in the form of bigger tax cuts will do it. They've already sent the bill to the Senate. We KNOW that trickle down will not do it. You think it will?

"Do You Want the Bush Agenda, Just Updated?"

Yes, the economy was very good under the Bush Administration, and the
Bush Tax Cuts was a major reson why.

A Bush economic policy without the big spending would put the country
back in good shape.

The "Bush is to blame for the recession" mantra is another "big lie"
that the left has gotten away with.

Bush was in office for eight years and the economy was good, with low
unemployment and healthy economic indicators.

The current bad economy is due to the financal crisis, brought-on by the
Democrats' scam of forced home ownership for the grossly unqualified.

Bush was practically packing to leave the White House and retire when
the financial crisis hit just before the 2008 general election. After
eight years of a good economy under Bush, to blame Bush economic
-policies- for something that the Democrats and Wall Street/Fanny-Freddy
created is ridiculous.

No, Bush didn't stop the Democrats sub prime loan scam, and he did waste
a budget surplus that was engineered by Newt and finally signed by
Clinton, but the basic Bush policies of tax cuts and the easing of
government regulations sprawl was sound enough. Nowhere near as good as
a real conservative would do, but light-years beyond the ruinous,
disastrous Obama "policies." Which obviously has not only prevented an
economic recovery, but has made the situation much worse.

The current bad economy is due to the financal crisis, brought-on by the
Democrats' scam of forced home ownership for the grossly unqualified.

... Who was in charge when it went bad? If it had not gone bad, would
your situation be good? As the 'situation' gets better, how can you blame
the original bad situation on the guy that wasn't there, but is fixing
it?
If a tornado comes through and damages your house, and the contractor
you hire to fix it is doing a lousy job, you don't say "That's OK, it
was the tornado's fault so I'll just pay this contractor more money to
keep fixing it." You get a new contractor.
Caveat: I don't buy into this whole partisan "It's all Bush's fault"
line. There were many factors at work and plenty of blame to go around,
on both parties.
Funny how pretty much everyone who espouses the "there's no difference" line
turns out to be a GOP apologist.

Are Americans *really* stupid enough to both blame Bush for the
economy and also want to fire Obama for it and hire the guy who will
do more of what Bush did?
You work (or worked) in the same industry I do. Do you know the term
"what have you done for me lately?" What happened 4 years ago is
completely irrelevant. Hell, what happened a month ago is irrelevant.
Bush is gone, out of the picture. Current issues all belong to Obama. I
know you liberals don't want to believe that, but that is the fact.
Independents will decide this election, and they aren't "but Bushing".
That completely misses the point. Why would anyone expect that we
can fix the economy by going back to doing the same thing that broke
it in the first place?

And, Turd, corporate tax cuts are good, not bad. The U.S. has almost the
highest corporate tax rates in the world, higher than full-blown
Euro-socialist countries. And, of course, Socialism has saved Greece and
all those countries from "The Great Depression," right (Chortle)?

Right, and that would be: going back to the Democrats' sub-prime loan
scam that triggered the collapse of the world-wide credit markets.
How embarrassing for you. A Republican deregulated Wall Street immorally rates AAA where it should be CCC; then bets against their own clients; and you're so stupid you believe it's was the Democrats? Hell, even the GOP hasn't tried that.

What a fool you are.

The people are angry, and angry voters do the only thing they
*can* do -- vote the incumbents out of office. The Democrats'
best strategy at this point is to make sure that the voters
understand that Romney would be Bush III.

Back to Bush, Only Much Worse?
That's a Hell of a campaign strategy. "Don't worry about what I did, just
worry about what my predecessor did, and the next guy could be worse."

Bush (either of them) was a horrible president. There is no evidence that
either of them, or any other president ever, was worse than Obama. If there
was, Obama could run on his own merit.

Bush 41 was NOT a horrible president, where do you get that? Even Clinton
has admitted that the boom during his hears was possible because of the
groundwork laid by 41.
